That is so true.. your need to put more effort if your realy wana achieve something big… cake wont just go into your mouth, u have to get it with your own hand… what we can see from those policies, its just like spoon-feeding.. “hak istimewa=spood-feeding” will only enrich the riches and poors are remain poor..

Think again pls, if there is so much speacialities or so called “keistimewaan” for you ppl and nothing for others and still u are falling behind in the economy…. is that mean you are just so no competitive at all??

I think this short movie is based on a true story happened a few months ag0 (nearly 1 year) in Pontian or Simpang Renggam, Johor. The boy character was a girl.

The girl spread SMS among chinese in her local community about racial amuk between Malay and Chinese. But her father brought her to the police to clear the issue.

even the “economic cake” we mentioned started from the prejudices.
and i cannot agree with what beetle_nite said, he/she is just another “katak di bawah tempurung” to me.
according to my knowledge, non-Malays have to work really hard to achieve what they desire.
if the Malays are really appreciating what they “deserve” and put some hard work on developing themselves and the country, and the non-Malays are keeping on their hard work to achieve the goal, our country will be as strong as the USA one day., I believe.

I can not agree more on this.
Affirmative action should be taken to hep unfortunate people who is lack of opportunity.

But it really do not make any sense that we should make someone rich simply because his race “want a better share of the cake”.

I’m a Malay and I say this: Want a bigger piece of the cake? Grab it yourself! How much you can get is up to how able you are to grab it! Don’t blame others. If you can’t grab enough, improve yourself. Invest in education. If you think the Chinese are rich, remember that their forefathers came to Tanah Melayu with only the clothes on their back.

They grabbed their piece… and the truth is, many of them will gladly teach you how to grab your piece but you must work hard and be willing to learn from anyone. The prejudices created by politicians are the real reason Malays are still poor – we could have learned from the non-Malays. Be humble, and learn.

The government should help only up to the point to break free from the vicious cycle of poverty, i.e. lack of social mobility due to lack of education or the lack of understanding the importance of education. This help should be given to any citizen because ignorance and poverty knows no bound.

I am grateful that government help has allowed me to get good education and given me a larger hand to grab the cake. Because the truth is, other than education, all these discriminatory policies enrich only the Malays (and their non-Malay cronies) who are already rich… while the poor ones of all races are just as poor as before.

i agree that majority of the malay still in poor ranking. But, please, the case like “House” made by Linus Chung is also happened often in chinese or indian community nowadays. Even, US also has poor citizen. The economy policy is implemented very long. What’s the result we can see? How’re the politician’s house luxury ? Malay criticize chinese’s wealth; chinese criticize Malay’s tongkat, but generated, The POOR (all race) criticize the RICH (all race); The unhelpful people (all race) criticize the helped people (all race).

Size of cake is remain the same but the no. of person is increasing. So, how we can share in fair together ? Please, malaysia government has to make the cake bigger and bigger…. Give the “tongkat” is not good but the helping in fair is needed … 50 years ago, a lot of other country are in the same line of starter, but after 50 years , we are still at the behind. 50 years ago, nobody going to china to invest, but 50 years later, the majority investor suggest move their invest to china.

So, please don’t separately malay, chinese or indian.
We all are Malaysian not malaysian chinese or malaysian indian and all live in MALAYSIA, . We are proud to live in a non earthquake and peace country.

To remain in power, they will continue to use this kind of tactics and statistics to make you feel threaten.

The real meaning of this film… It’s much much more than gangsterism, bullies and Chinese/Malays beating up Malays/Chinese……

I salute to many of the previous comments. I am limited in knowledge towards what’s going on around us, but just to clarify the reason this film is created, for those who didn’t watch ‘The Making of the Son’, here’s what Desmond said (I’ll only extract the main points):

“[…] Pete mentioned that he wanted to do a film about fear and distrust among communities – the whole issues of racial prejudice and intolerance […] the film is about an individual who is sort of struggling inner demons and doesn’t know why […] And the ending sort of got a little twist… Kind of suggested the current state of social issues that’s facing the country right now.”

It is true. The ‘inner demons’ Desmond was mentioning about, just as Bobby Jane quoted: “there is a sub-conscious hatred towards one another.” To clarify that more, I have a short story: A few scientists were making an experiment with 5 monkeys (A,B,C,D and E) and a banana tree in a lab, whereby if any monkey touches the bananas on the tree, they’ll be sprayed by freezing cold water. All 5 monkeys are aware after some ‘training’. Then, the scientists replaced A with F. F entered and saw the bananas and rushed to grab it, but the other 4 monkeys caught him and beat him up, because they do not want to be sprayed by water. F got serious injuries from that. Soon, they replaced B with G, G attempted to grab the bananas and ended up got beaten, with F beating the hardest among the rest. C got replaced with H, the same thing happened, with G hitting the hardest and so on. BUT, after the last of the first batch of monkeys, E is replaced, the monkeys beat up the new replaced monkey who attempt to grab the bananas, from time to time.

But they never know why they cannot grab the bananas.

Due to their parents or ancestors and the way they ‘educated’ them, youngsters nowdays generate inner hatred towards one another (mainly non-Malay and Malay, i’m sorry to use these words, but it’s best to describe it.) But on some cases, they do not know why they hate the Malays so much. We all know who’s responsible for all these ‘misunderstandings’ and they’re all having positions. I’m sure the Malays are having a hard time themselves being discriminated just because the poiticians are giving them rights. I, myself, am a Chinese, but I feel sympathy towards the way Malay are treated.

About the film, it’s true. It’s all about NON-MALAY and MALAY. These words sound extremely segregating and offensive, but it’s the fact. People are using these words from time to time sub-consciously. Ask yourselves and be honest. Do you have an ‘inner demon’ in you, to feel prejudice towards other races? Do you have any feeling of dislike towards them? Don’t start denying now, ask your own heart. If the government gave Malay more rights and reduce non-Malay’s rights, will you hate the government, or indirectly, the Malays? If you have, stop talking about 1Malaysia, stop talking about bad politicians, stop talking about changing the country…

Start talking about YOURSELF. Change yourself for the better. From Page 2 of the comments, ‘dunno duncare’ had said the magic words. If only you made a difference in yourself, then you can make a difference in other people.

I bow for you, Desmond, for making this short film. I believe this film will have plenty of comments after mine. In the end, I will not say “1Malaysia changes the country!” or “Everyone! 1Malaysia! Think as 1!”. Based on all the happenings, I will only say:

along the way the videos being released i read a lot the good and the bad messages being posted. i just hope that everyone will get a positive message and not just blah! this is bad that is @#$.. :/

if u find it hard to treat everyone by labeling each of them with races, then try to treat everyone as people or “one of ur kind” .. well at least i find it’s easy to work with my colleagues that come from many religions, and many asian countries 🙂
