Suleiman Brothers

Jordan and Mussadique Suleiman are a creative partnership that speicalizes in hand drawn animation, 3D and 2D motion graphics, video compositing as well as image processing. While Mussadique is a self-professed science and software coding geek, Jordan is a self-taught computer graphics and animation artist of great imagination and flair. Their production company – Studio Voxel – has been responsible for a wide range of artistic, commercial and corporate work – the most noted have been AIM Award winning music videos for artist Pete Teo entitled ‘Arms Of Marianne’ and ‘Lost In America’. Mussadique and Jordan’s fluency in the technical aspects of CGI production, combined with their understanding for symbolism and semiotics, makes for work that is rich both in visual imagination and texture meaning. Their mastery of open source and customized software also means that they often produce work that transcends tight budgetary constraints. They are currently working towards making a feature length animation movie.

Nam Ron

Nam Ron

Nam Ron was born in Perlis and is a graduate of the National Arts Academy. Having collaborated with directors such as Yasmin Ahmad, Dain Said, Adman Salleh, James Lee, Tan Chui Mui, Woo Ming Jin and Amir Muhammad, he is also one of the most accomplished theatre and film actors in Malaysia today. While his acting talents make him one of the most sought-after actors of his generation, he is also a passionate filmmaker of immense promise. To date, he has made several short films, telemovies and one independently funded feature length digital movie entitled ‘Gadoh’. Nam Ron’s penchant for rich visual symbolism and deep concern for social politics makes him one of the most interesting new filmmaking voices in Malaysia. Currently, other than acting in a number of commercial and independent films helmed by some of the country’s best directors, he is writing his second feature film, which is expected to go into production in 2010.

Khairil Bahar

Khairil Bahar

Khairil Bahar experimented with many low budget short films before making his first feature film – ‘Ciplak’ – for a super low budget of RM10,000. Despite its modest budget, the film was released by Golden Screen Cinemas to great reviews and won the ‘Best Alternative Film Award’ at the Anugerah Skrin 2006. He has since written and directed many episodes of TV staples such as ‘Ampang Medikal’, ‘Ghost’ and ‘Dark City’ as well as made numerous music videos for independent bands such as Y2K, One Buck Short, Dragon Red, Azizi and Soft Touch. Khairil is currently putting finishing touches to his second feature film ‘London Calling’. It stars Justin Chan, Chermaine Poo, Melissa Maureen Rizal as well as himself. When not writing or directing films or TV dramas, he can be found either producing films, acting in films, working as a stunt man, writing for magazines or playing the guitar for his excellent rock band ‘Rollin Sixers’.

Johan John

Johan John

Before choosing filmmaking as his vocation, Johan John made ends meet by working as an audio engineer at various recording studios and pubs in Kuala Lumpur. He started making films in 2006, after he had graduated from Akedemi Filem Malaysia and worked as a freelance sound designer and offline film editor. His first shot film ‘Tajuk Cerita’ was released to critical acclaim and was nominated for ‘Best Alternative Film’ at Anugerah Skrin 2006. Johan’s penchant for portraying taboo intimacy and edgy sensuality on film subsequently landed him jobs as director for various TV commercials, 8TV programs, Astro Ria movies and documentaries for the Astro Crime & Investigation Network. He wrote and directed his first full-length feature film ‘Andai’ in 2007 and is currently in post-production of his second feature film entitled ‘Cahaya’. The film stars Khir Rahman and Elaine Daly and is expected to release in late 2009.

Benji & Bahir

Benji Lim & Bahir Yeusuff

Benji Lim and Bahir Yeusuff are a young directing / producing team in the beginning of their careers. Since co-founding their own production entity ‘Perantauan Pictures’ with collaborator Arivind Abraham in 2004, they have made various TV programs as well as independent feature films – including the critically acclaimed ‘S’kali’ – which was released exclusively by Cathay Cineplex in 2006. This team has since completed two more feature length films – ‘5.13’ and ‘The Joshua Tapes’ – both of which are expected to release in 2010. Individually, Bahir has produced film projects since he was at college and continues to do so professionally now, while Benji has shot, written and directed numerous films since attending the Electronic Media Film program at Towson University in Maryland – including the Towson Media Festival nominated documentary ‘Shook!’ and a successful series of Internet viral advertisements for Tiger Beer. They have been friends since secondary school.

James Lee

James Lee

James Lee is one of the pioneers of digital filmmaking in Malaysia. Having produced, directed, or worked as cinematographer to than 35 films within a period of just 9 years, he is perhaps also the most hardworking Malaysian filmmaker today. Known for his quirky art house sensibilities, his digital films have been regular features at regional film festivals in recent years. His most renowned work to date is ‘My Beautiful Washing Machine’, which won the Best Asean Film Award and the FIPRESCI Prize at the Bangkok International Film Festival in 2005. His first commercial feature film ‘Hysteria’ was a commercial hit in Malaysia in 2009. His latest digital feature ‘Call If You Need Me’ won the Silver Prize in the digital film category in the 2009 Hong Kong International Film Festival. When not making feature films, James directs TV dramas for a living. He is currently working towards making an action-thriller feature film for commercial release in 2010.

Woo Ming Jin

Woo Ming Jin

Woo Ming Jin was a scholarship student for film and television production at the San Diego State University. Since his return to Malaysia in 1999, he has worked on a broad range of television shows, TV commercials, short films and feature films. His debut feature film ‘Monday Morning Glory’ premiered at the San Francisco International Film Festival in 2005 and was invited to the Pusan International Film Festival, Tokyo International Film Festival, Berlin International Film Festival and Locarno International Film Festival in the same year. He was hailed by Variety magazine as a “brilliant, striking new voice on the East Asian scene…” upon the release of his second feature film ‘The Elephant and The Sea’ in 2007. The film subsequently won multiple awards in international film festivals and has since been screened in more than 30 film festivals worldwide. Ming Jin is currently in post-production of his soon-to-be-released third feature film ‘Woman On Fire Looks For Water’.

Tan Chui Mui

Tan Chui Mui

Tan Chui Mui graduated from Multimedia University with a Bachelor Degree of Multimedia in Animation & Film in 2002. Since then, she has emerged as one of the most monitored young filmmakers in the international film festival scene. Her short films have won numerous prizes and awards in European festivals and her first full-length feature film ‘Love Conquers All’ won multiple new director’s awards in the Rotterdam International Film Festival as well as Busan International Film Festival in 2006. Other than directing her own films, Chui Mui also produces films by other Malaysian independent filmmakers such as James Lee, Amir Muhammad and Liew Seng Tat. Her work is characterized by a poetic sensibility borne out of her small town upbringing and a keen eye for stories based on personal growth and redemption. She is currently working on her second feature film ‘The Year Without A Summer’. It is in Malay and will be shot on location in Pahang.

Kamal Sabran

Kamal Sabran

Kamal Sabran is an artist, designer and researcher. His work stands at the intersection of art, science and technology. His paintings, video art, short films, sound art and installations have been shown at art spaces and festivals domestically as well as in Indonesia and Singapore. In search of ever widening means of artistic expression, Kamal constantly looks for collaborative opportunities with artists, poets, photographers, designers, musicians, filmmakers, researchers and scientists. His ability to evoke a poignant sense of place and time by the use of new media technology won him the ‘Best New Media Artist Award’ from the Malaysian National Art Gallery in 2004 as well as the ‘ASEAN New Media Artist Award’ from the Indonesian National Art Gallery in 2007. He was Artist-In-Residence at the Malaysian National Space Agency in 2005. Other than working in the field of contemporary media arts, Kamal has also made award winning music videos for artists such as Pete Teo and Alleycats. He is based in Ipoh.

Desmond Ng

Desmond Ng

Desmond Ng graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Finance and Cinema Studies from Melbourne University in 1995 before attending a filmmaking course in New York in 1998. Upon returning to Kuala Lumpur, he began working in the advertising industry and has since developed into one of the most accomplished TV commercial directors in Malaysia with more than 100 spots to his name in just over 7 years. His work for the likes of Maxis, Digi, Celcom, Sony, Coke, Gudang Garam and Philip Morris have won numerous ‘Best Commercial’ and ‘Best Director’ awards at advertising industry awards such as the Kancil Awards (Malaysia), the Adoi Awards (Indonesia) and the Citrapariwara Awards (Indonesia). Based out of Jakarta and Kuala Lumpur, Desmond makes short films when he has time. His films have been screened at the Singapore International Film Festival as well as the Jakarta International Film Festival. He is currently writing his first feature length movie.
